About the Institution

Founded in 1994, the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation (GSTI) at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is China’s first graduate school dedicated to translation and interpreting. Its origins date back to the UN Translator and Interpreter Training Program launched in 1979. GSTI has since trained over 2,500 professionals for international organizations including the United Nations, as well as major domestic institutions.

The School maintains robust partnerships with UN agencies and regularly hosts senior UN translators and interpreters for lectures and training. Students benefit from internship opportunities with organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and UN offices in New York, Geneva, and Vienna.

GSTI’s faculty includes nearly 30 full-time professionals who have collectively interpreted at over 20,000 international conferences.

In recent years, GSTI has emphasized both talent development and academic research in alignment with BFSU’s ambition to establish a world-class translation studies program. Since 2017, it has led numerous national and provincial research initiatives, published over 100 academic articles in SSCI, A&HCI, and CSSCI-indexed journals, and produced more than 50 books, including monographs, translations, and textbooks.

The School publishes Interpreting and Society: An Interdisciplinary Journal, a Scopus-indexed English journal in collaboration with SAGE and serves as the Secretariat for the BFSU Research Centre for Country-Specific Translation and Interpretation Capacity, which issues global translation capacity rankings annually.

GSTI is a member of CIUTI (Conférence Internationale Permanente d’Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes) since 2008—the first Chinese institution to join. It also offers a joint-degree program with the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, USA.
